Ola Electric launches “Ola Shakti” — its first battery energy storage system
Ola Electric has officially entered the battery energy storage (BESS) business with the unveiling of Ola Shakti, a residential energy storage product designed to power homes, farms, and small businesses. The device leverages Ola’s own 4680 Bharat Cell technology and is engineered, manufactured, and scaled via its existing gigafactory and distribution network in Tamil Nadu, enabling a faster rollout without requiring fresh R&D or major capex. Ola projects that battery consumption for the BESS segment could reach 5 GWh annually, potentially surpassing its vehicle battery demand in the coming years.
With the launch of Shakti, Ola aims to diversify beyond electric mobility and become a player in India’s energy infrastructure evolution. The modular BESS units are built for scalability, with up to 98% efficiency, zero maintenance costs, and seamless switching for appliances like A/Cs and pumps. Pricing starts from ₹29,999 for a 1 kW / 1.5 kWh variant, with larger capacities scaling to ₹1,59,999 for 6 kW / 9.1 kWh. Deliveries are slated to begin in January 2026, with Ola aiming to capture a significant share in India’s budding residential battery storage market.
By extending its EV battery expertise into home and grid storage, Ola positions itself at the junction of mobility, clean energy, and decentralized power infrastructure. As India’s grid faces challenges with renewable integration, demand for reliable BESS is expected to surge — and Ola is betting on this transition as its next growth frontier.
Note: The industry response to Ola Shakti is largely positive, which could be a game-changer, disrupting the inverter and battery market. As the BESS market is projected to grow, it gives a huge opportunity for Ola Electric. But there are concerns about meeting delivery timelines and handling customer service issues.
