Toronto startup Peripheral Labs raises $8.7 million to bring 3D replays to sports
A Toronto based startup called Peripheral Labs has raised 8.7 million US dollars in seed funding to bring its 3D video technology to sports broadcasting and coaching. The new round takes the company’s total funding to 12.5 million US dollars since it was founded in 2024.
Peripheral was started by Kelvin Cui and Mustafa Khan, two University of Toronto robotics graduates who previously worked as engineers on self driving cars. They have built what is called a large reconstruction model, a system that can take ordinary 2D camera footage from a stadium and turn it into a 3D video that viewers can navigate and view from different angles, all happening in real time.
The technology borrows heavily from work done in robotics and self driving cars, where machines need to build a three dimensional understanding of the world from camera footage. Applied to sports, this means fans, coaches and broadcasters could soon be able to replay a play from any angle, almost like freezing a moment in a video game and walking around it.
The new funding round was co-led by Deloitte Ventures in Toronto and Inovia Capital in Montreal, with existing investors Khosla Ventures and Entrepreneurs First also taking part. Jon Wolkin, a managing director at Deloitte Ventures, said the firm sees growing interest in more immersive ways for fans to experience sports, and believes Peripheral’s technology fits well with that shift.
Peripheral has already tested its system during NBA and WNBA summer league games through the NBA’s Launchpad program for new sports technology. Clips created using the technology and shared by the Toronto Raptors on social media have reportedly been viewed millions of times.
With the new funds, Peripheral plans to grow its engineering team and work with more sports leagues and stadiums to deploy its system. The company also plans to launch a browser based version of its replay technology for everyday viewers later this year, potentially bringing this kind of 3D replay experience directly to fans watching from home.
