Ola Electric unveils ‘rare earth free’ ferrite motor and 4680 Bharat Cell
News, 17 August 2025
At Sankalp 2025 on 15 August 2025, held at its Gigafactory in Tamil Nadu, Ola Electric introduced its first indigenously developed 4680 Bharat Cell and a pioneering ferrite motor that eliminates reliance on rare-earth metals—a milestone that reinforces India’s energy independence and manufacturing sovereignty.
The 4680 Bharat Cell, India’s first homegrown lithium-ion cell, boasts 10% higher energy density and an expected lifespan of around 15 years. It will power newly unveiled models including the S1 Pro+ scooter and Roadster X+, with deliveries slated to begin this Navratri.
The standout reveal, however, was the ferrite motor—completely free of rare-earth magnets like neodymium—signaling a breakthrough in responding to global supply vulnerabilities, particularly as China controls a significant share of rare-earth exports. Ola plans a phased rollout from Q3 of FY26, aiming to transition its entire product portfolio within the next few quarters.
Beyond hardware, Ola also launched MoveOS 6, its AI-powered operating system featuring voice assistant, customizable motor sounds, personalized ride insights, energy-saving boosts, and advanced safety add-ons like adaptive cruise control and collision warnings. Ola claims MoveOS 6 improves efficiency by 15%, sheds 25% of system weight, and cuts costs by 43%, signaling a sharp push for smarter, leaner EV tech.
The event also unveiled the futuristic “Diamondhead” motorcycle—designed with hub-centered steering, aerospace-grade composites, and AR-interaction readiness—targeted for a 2027 launch under ₹5 lakh.
