CARIAD and Bosch collaborate to build AI powered L2 and L3 software
News, 12 August 2025
In a strategic push toward safer, smarter automated driving, Bosch and CARIAD (Volkswagen Group’s software arm), have deepened their collaboration under the Automated Driving Alliance. The partnership is building an AI-driven software stack enabling SAE Level 2 and Level 3 driving where under certain conditions, drivers can remove their hands and eyes from the road.
The collaboration will harnesses end-to-end artificial intelligence across the entire driving workflow from perceiving the environment to interpreting data, making decisions, and executing maneuvers. This mimics the nuanced decision-making process of a human driver, aiming to elevate both comfort and road safety.
Statements from leadership underscore the strategic importance of this development. Peter Bosch, CEO of CARIAD, emphasized the alliance’s role in reinforcing Europe’s digital sovereignty while making advanced driver assistance accessible across market segments. Mathias Pillin, CTO at Bosch Mobility, noted that “data and AI are the key” to bringing reliable automated driving to scale.
Early versions of the software are already being refined in real-world settings, including on vehicles such as the VW ID.Buzz and Audi Q8. These test fleets are receiving multiple software updates daily, enabling rapid iteration based on data collected from complex and “corner case” scenarios
The production-ready solution is targeted for mid-2026 deployment. Volkswagen intends to integrate it within its new software-defined vehicle platform, while Bosch plans to offer it to other automakers globally a move aimed at widespread adoption of intelligent driving technologies
Key highlights-
Human-Like AI Capabilities
Leveraging state-of-the-art AI such as generative models and vision-language-action (VLA) techniques—the stack can analyze urban traffic, anticipate behaviors, and make intuitive decisions.
Full In-House Ownership
Bosch and CARIAD have developed the solution entirely in-house, retaining full control over source code, safety standards, data privacy, and cybersecurity.
Global Real-World Testing
The ongoing trials span Europe, Japan, and the United States, enabling broad evaluation and iterative improvements under varied road and regulatory environments.
Democratizing Automated Driving
By targeting both mass-market and premium vehicles, the alliance aims to bring Level 2 and 3 driving convenience to millions of private motorists—not just ride-hailing fleets or robotaxis.
The Road Ahead
With production slated for mid-2026, Bosch and CARIAD are positioning themselves at the vanguard of AI-powered automated driving. Their vision blends aggressive data-driven development, guarded European autonomy in tech, and the promise of mainstream-ready Level 3 capabilities. As the race for safe, scalable driving automation heats up, this alliance may soon set new industry benchmarks.
