VinFast EV factory: a new dawn in Tamil Nadu’s auto story

Press Release, 5 August 2025

A bold move, a big emotion: VinFast goes global right into Indian soil.

Vietnamese EV-maker VinFast has opened its first manufacturing plant outside its home base in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.

Why This Matters: From Vietnam to Thoothukudi

VinFast Tamil Nadu is the company’s third operational plant but the very first outside Vietnam.
Spread across 400 acres, it boasts cutting-edge workshops from body paint and assembly to quality control and logistics—all designed to world-class standards.

Highlights at a glance:

  • Initial production capacity: 50,000 electric SUVs/year
  • Scalable to: 150,000 units annually to meet soaring demand.
  • Models rolling off the line first: premium SUVs VF 6 and VF 7
  • Jobs created: 3,000–3,500 direct roles, plus thousands more indirectly through suppliers and contractors.
Hon. Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru. M K Stalin signs the first VF7 premium SUV that rolled out from the assembly line of VinFast India plant in a grand opening ceremony in Thoothukudi

The Human & Economic Angle

VinFast’s Tamil Nadu facility isn’t just bricks and machines it’s a jobs engine for the region. With 80% of the workforce drawn from local communities, many as trainees or freshers, it’s a win for socio‑economic inclusion and skill development. The plant positions Thoothukudi as Tamil Nadu’s rising automotive hub beyond Chennai’s well-entrenched legacy.

VinFast’s Vision: India as the EV Capital of South Asia

CEO Pham Sanh Chau offered an emotional and strategic outlook at the inauguration:

“The VinFast Tamil Nadu plant marks a strategic milestone in our long‑term commitment to the Indian market… we aim to develop it into VinFast’s largest export hub for South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.”.

VinFast has already received export orders from countries such as Sri Lanka and Mauritius, underlining its ambition.

Strategy & Industry Impact

  • $2 billion project, with ₹1,300 crore (~$500M USD) invested so far VinFast is steadily scaling up phase‑wise.
  • Assembled on CKD (Completely Knocked‑Down) basis first, allowing a lean, scalable ramp-up
  • Yet, and notably, the plant (capitalized before approval) misses the criteria for India’s EV incentive scheme, requiring an additional ₹4,150 crore to qualify.
