MoRTH proposes dual color number plates for hydrogen vehicles
News, 30 June 2025
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed new dual-color registration plates for hydrogen-powered vehicles to enable easier identification and promote green mobility in India.
Under this draft notification, hydrogen vehicles will feature number plates with a green top half and a blue bottom half. Commercial hydrogen vehicles will display yellow lettering, while private hydrogen vehicles will have white lettering. Hydrogen-powered taxis will be identifiable by number plates with a black top half, a blue bottom half, and yellow lettering. This measure is intended to simplify the recognition of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles by both authorities and the public.
Recent development in hydrogen fuel and vehicle
In India, several significant initiatives are underway . Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) is advancing fuel cell testing for hydrogen vehicles, developing a controller system for rigorous testing without physical vehicle use, crucial for heavy-duty applications. Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Ohmium International are partnering to develop green hydrogen microgrid solutions, aiming for scalable and cost-effective energy. NTPC has provided five hydrogen fuel cell buses to SIDCO as part of the Green Hydrogen Mobility Project in Leh, supported by a solar-powered mobility station. IndianOil plans to establish India’s largest green hydrogen plant in Panipat by December 2027, with a 10,000 tonnes per annum capacity, aligning with the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Furthermore, HORIBA India and IIT Delhi are collaborating on research in EVs and green hydrogen, including a proton-conducting solid oxide electrolysis cell. The Adani Group has also launched hydrogen-powered truck for coal transportation in Chhattisgarh, signaling a shift towards cleaner logistics in the mining sector.
