Equinix launches Chennai’s first AI-ready IBX data center, investing $69 million

Press Release, 22 September 2025

Equinix has officially opened its first AI-ready International Business Exchange (IBX) data center in Chennai, named CN1, marking a major expansion of its digital infrastructure in India. Located in Siruseri on nearly six acres, the facility has begun operations with 800 cabinet units and is designed to scale up to 4,250 cabinets over the coming 4-6 years.

With an initial investment of USD 69 million (around ₹600-₹610 crore), CN1 is engineered to support high-density, compute-heavy workloads central to AI, cloud computing, and digital services. It features top-tier reliability with 99.999% uptime, liquid cooling readiness, and multiple paths of fibre connectivity. It will be linked with Equinix’s existing Mumbai campus, allowing enterprises in southern India faster, more direct access to cloud services and global networks.

According to Equinix India’s Managing Director, Manoj Paul, the Chennai facility extends the interconnected ecosystem that the company has already built in Mumbai serving cloud providers, carriers, internet exchanges, and content providers into Tamil Nadu. The facility also underscores rising demand for data infrastructure in India, especially to support AI innovation, edge computing, and meeting needs for low-latency operations across industries including IT, OTT, finance and manufacturing.
