Breakthrough sodium-ion battery could disrupt long-standing automotive power tech

A U.S. company’s cutting-edge battery technology is set to shake up a century-old automotive staple the 12-volt starter battery presenting a safer, longer-lasting, and more sustainable alternative to traditional lead-acid cells.

San Diego-based UNIGRID Inc. recently unveiled its Na⁺ Fleet platform: a line of 12-volt sodium-ion batteries designed to directly replace lead-acid starter, lighting, and ignition (SLI) batteries used in cars, trucks, motorcycles, and even equipment like forklifts.

What makes this tech noteworthy is not just that it matches the voltage and form factor of the lead-acid units it replaces it far outperforms them in key areas. Na⁺ Fleet batteries boast over 5,000 charge cycles, roughly ten times the lifespan of typical lead-acid options. They also perform reliably across extreme temperatures, retain charge better during storage, and require no complex battery-management system, making them easier and cheaper for manufacturers to integrate.

Sodium-ion chemistry under the hood brings a suite of advantages: it’s inherently safer (less risk of thermal runaway or fire), lighter, and based on abundant raw materials compared with lithium-based cells. And because these batteries drop straight into existing vehicle trays without modification, automakers and parts suppliers could adopt the technology without major redesigns.

Industry analysts say this could sharply reduce waste from old lead-acid packs, which are heavy, contain hazardous materials, and require frequent replacement. If Na⁺ Fleet scales commercially, it may rewrite expectations for auxiliary automotive power, spanning from internal combustion engine vehicles to hybrid and electric platforms that still rely on 12-volt systems today.

This isn’t just incremental improvement it’s a potential disruptive shift in how vehicles are powered at the most basic electrical level.
