Adient and Autoliv team up for“Zero-Gravity” seat safety solution

Press Release 15 October 2025

Adient, a name in automotive seating, and Autoliv, a specialist in vehicle safety systems, have teamed up to launch a new dynamic seat safety solution aimed squarely at protecting occupants in deeply reclined (“zero-gravity”) seating positions. Their joint concept, called Z-Guard, is now primed for mass production in an upcoming high-volume model by a major OEM.

Traditional safety systems—seat belts, airbags, restraint structures—are largely optimized for upright seating. But as electrification and smart cockpit designs gain ground, more vehicles are offering deeply reclined seats for comfort and ergonomics—posing fresh challenges to occupant protection.Z-Guard addresses this by combining intelligent seat, restraint, and predictive safety technologies in a “multi-dimensional collaborative protection” framework.

Key features include an active cushion collapse mechanism that deforms the seat frame during a crash to dissipate impact energy and reduce spinal loads, and a dynamic seat belt outlet that adapts to various postures and body types to minimize slippage and improve restraint precision. On the airbag side, Autoliv contributes a pelvic cushion airbag, enhanced head-side airbag, an integrated seatbelt system, and a dynamic lumbar retractor—all tuned to protect critical regions (head, neck, chest, pelvis) in reclined positions.

Beyond crash response, Z-Guard is designed to integrate with vehicle driver-assist systems: using predictive sensors, the seat can reposition occupants moments before an impact to limit injury risk. In scenarios where last-second repositioning isn’t possible, the combined system still protects via dual pretensioners, cushioning, and collapse strategy to prevent forward movement or “submarining.”

With Z-Guard moving toward real-world deployment, the partnership marks a significant step in redefining how occupant safety keeps pace with evolving vehicle interior designs and comfort trends.
