Kawasaki unveils Hydrogen-powered four-legged venture for extreme terrain

Press Release, 4 February 2025

Japanese industrial and mobility giant Kawasaki Heavy Industries has launched formal development of an extraordinary off-road vehicle concept named CORLEO a four-legged, hydrogen-powered personal mobility machine that literally walks where conventional bikes and ATVs cannot. First introduced at the Japan World Expo 2025 in Osaka, CORLEO represents a bold glimpse into how future travel across rugged landscapes might evolve beyond wheels and tracks into all-terrain locomotion inspired by animal movement.

Unlike traditional motorcycles, CORLEO uses robotic legs to traverse uneven, rocky, or soft ground that would typically challenge wheeled vehicles. Its hydrogen fuel system paired with a 150 cc engine that generates electricity for limb movement underlines Kawasaki’s push toward zero-emission mobility while offering a stable, agile platform for off-road travel. The design borrows hints from nature, mimicking four-limb movement to maintain balance and traction on slopes, loose soil, and other challenging conditions. Riders mount it similarly to a horseback saddle, and weight shifts help guide direction and gait, making the experience intuitive even for less experienced users.

Kawasaki’s vision for CORLEO extends far beyond a concept display. The company has established a dedicated Safe Adventure Business Development Team to progress the project toward real-world application, targeting a functional showcase at Expo 2030 in Riyadh and aiming for commercial availability around 2035. Alongside the vehicle itself, Kawasaki plans complementary innovations such as riding simulators and advanced navigation systems that assess terrain, weather, and wildlife risks to enhance safety in remote environments.

CORLEO reflects a broader shift in mobility thinking blending robotics, clean energy, and human interaction to expand access to previously unreachable terrain. If successful, it could usher in a new category of personal transport tailored to adventure, exploration, rescue operations, and environments where traditional vehicles struggle most.
