Visteon and TomTom unveil in-car local AI navigation system

Press Release, 14 January 2026

Visteon Corporation and TomTom have teamed up to introduce what they’re calling the world’s first in-car local AI conversational navigation system, designed to deliver smart, privacy-focused navigation directly on the vehicle’s hardware. This new solution combines Visteon’s cognitoAI™ platform a multimodal artificial intelligence engine with TomTom’s established Automotive Navigation Application to create a navigation experience that operates primarily on-device, reducing reliance on cloud connectivity and keeping driver data private and secure.

Unlike traditional cloud-based systems, the local AI navigation assistant processes voice commands and directions within the vehicle, offering faster responses and greater reliability even when connectivity is limited. Drivers can use natural language to ask for directions, find specific places, or adjust routes, with the system intelligently interpreting conversational requests rather than rigid commands. The integrated navigation also factors in real-time traffic and weather information, and for electric vehicle users, it can suggest optimal charging stops based on battery status and route planning.

Visteon’s hybrid AI architecture seamlessly switches between offline and online modes, ensuring continuous operation under various conditions, while TomTom’s location technology contributes detailed maps and navigation intelligence. The alliance highlights a growing trend in automotive tech toward edge-based AI solutions that elevate the in-car experience with speed, personalization, and improved privacy protections. Both companies describe this partnership as setting a new benchmark for how AI-driven navigation can function directly inside vehicles without compromising security or performance.

This collaboration marks a meaningful step forward in in-vehicle AI, promising drivers a more responsive and intuitive navigation journey that respects their data and adapts to real-world driving needs.
