Digital car keys go mainstream: CCC certifications soar in 2025
Press Release, 7 January 2026
In a major milestone for vehicle technology, the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) has confirmed that digital car key standards saw explosive growth in 2025, with 115 products earning CCC Digital Key™ certification worldwide. This surge highlights that smartphone-based vehicle access once a luxury feature is rapidly becoming a global standard for secure and convenient mobility.
The CCC’s certification program, which sets benchmark requirements for digital vehicle access systems, added a broad mix of both vehicles and key modules last year. Automakers including Audi, BMW, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo and many others reached certification, along with key technology partners such as Qualcomm, NXP Semiconductors and Texas Instruments. Notably, 2025 also marked the first inclusion of CCC-certified vehicles from China, reflecting a significant expansion into one of the world’s largest automotive markets.
According to CCC leadership, this uptick shows the industry moving past early experimentation into widespread adoption of digital key technology. Beyond simply locking and unlocking cars via smartphones, certified systems support a range of real-world uses from sharing keys with family members to enabling secure access for valet parking, rental fleets, and shared mobility services. With digital key tech now embedded into vehicles across Europe, North America, and Asia-Pacific, these features are expected to shift from premium options to standard expectations for modern drivers.
The global automotive digital key market has also been on a steep growth trajectory up from a multi-billion-dollar industry just a few years ago and projected to expand further as demand rises for secure, interoperable solutions that work across brands and devices. CCC’s role in setting and verifying these standards helps ensure consumers can use a single trusted digital key across different vehicles and mobile platforms, while giving manufacturers confidence that their products meet strict security and compatibility requirements.
With more manufacturers and technology partners joining the certification program and digital keys appearing on more vehicles, 2025 stands out as a turning point in the evolution of how we access and interact with our cars.
