ROHM & Tata Electronics team up to build India’s semiconductor muscle

Japanese semiconductor leader ROHM Co., Ltd. and Indian electronics powerhouse Tata Electronics have formally announced a strategic partnership to strengthen semiconductor manufacturing in India, targeting both domestic demand and export markets. This collaboration is a major step in expanding India’s chip ecosystem, combining ROHM’s advanced device designs with Tata Electronics’ growing backend manufacturing capabilities.
Under the agreement, the initial focus will be on establishing a manufacturing framework for power semiconductors in India. These components are essential across industries, including automotive, industrial systems, and consumer electronics. The integration blends ROHM’s device and process technology expertise with Tata Electronics’ capacity in assembly, testing and packaging, creating a robust platform for semiconductor production in the country.
As a first concrete step, Tata Electronics will begin the assembly and testing of ROHM’s India-designed automotive-grade N-channel 100V, 300A silicon MOSFETs in a TOLL package. These chips are critical for electric vehicles and other power-sensitive applications. The companies are targeting mass production shipments by 2026, marking a significant milestone in India’s journey toward semiconductor self-reliance.
Both parties also plan to explore co-development of advanced packaging technologies in later phases of the partnership, further enhancing value addition and technological depth within the Indian semiconductor supply chain. By leveraging their combined sales networks and distribution channels, ROHM and Tata Electronics aim to unlock new business opportunities and deliver higher-value solutions to customers in India and abroad.
This alliance aligns closely with the Indian government’s “Make in India” and “Designed in India, Manufactured in India” initiatives, which are designed to reduce reliance on imports and build a homegrown semiconductor industry. By establishing a locally rooted ecosystem spanning design, development, assembly, and testing, the collaboration seeks to enhance domestic value addition and create a sustainable, resilient supply chain.
Leadership from both firms emphasized that this partnership not only strengthens the semiconductor landscape in India but also supports broader global supply chain resilience, further positioning India as a key player in advanced technology manufacturing.
