Indra rolls out live V2X tolling on US highway
Press Release, 4 December 2025
In a landmark move for U.S. transportation infrastructure, Indra in partnership with North Carolina Turnpike Authority (NCTA) has successfully completed end-to-end testing of its connected-vehicle tolling system, making I‑485 Express Lanes the first highway in the United States to support live C‑V2X-based tolling. The implementation integrates real-time toll notifications delivered directly to vehicles equipped with C-V2X inside the cockpit eliminating the need for separate transponders, mobile apps, or roadside pay stations.
Beyond tolling, the deployment also includes a sophisticated 3D LiDAR-powered safety layer — roadside sensors now detect hazards like pedestrians, stalled vehicles, or wrong-way drivers, and relay warnings to connected vehicles instantly. This dual functionality marks the first time a U.S. highway supports both tolling and safety messaging via V2X.
The completion of this demonstration phase has prompted NCTA to signal plans for a full-corridor rollout, with multi-gantry coverage slated to extend across the I-485 Express Lanes. Both Indra and NCTA believe this project could redefine toll collection and road safety infrastructure nationwide — setting a new standard for connected mobility and paving the way for scalable, interoperable V2X-based systems across other highways.
