Waymo to launch driverless ride-hailing in London in 2026

Alphabet’s autonomous driving arm Waymo has announced plans to deploy fully driverless (no human behind the wheel) ride-hailing services in London in 2026, marking its first major expansion into Europe. According to Reuters, Waymo will begin testing with safety drivers in London streets in the near future while it works through regulatory approvals and local partnerships.

Currently, Waymo operates commercial robotaxi services in multiple U.S. cities — including PhoenixSan FranciscoLos AngelesAtlanta, and Austin — where it handles hundreds of thousands of rides weekly. To gear up for London, Waymo is collaborating with Moove, a fleet financing company, to manage the vehicle operations and charging infrastructure in the UK market.

London presents unique challenges such as traffic density, varied road rules, weather, and historic urban layout. But if Waymo succeeds, it could open the door for robotaxi services in more European cities. It also reflects growing confidence in autonomous technology maturity and regulatory readiness abroad. As per Waymo’s own blog, the company has already started publicizing “Hello London! Your Waymo ride is arriving,” signaling its intentions.

This development comes amid growing momentum in autonomous mobility. Recently, Waymo also struck a new partnership with DoorDash to utilize its robotaxis for delivery operations in Phoenix, blending parcel logistics with ride services to maximize fleet utilization.

In essence, Waymo’s London launch could be a watershed moment — scaling its U.S. success across the Atlantic and testing whether robotaxis can thrive in dense, regulated urban markets. If all goes well, 2026 might mark the beginning of a new era in how people and goods move across European cities.
