Dongfeng to retrofit 3,000 diesel trucks nnnually into hydrogen vehicles
China. 5 September 2025
China’s automotive company Dongfeng Motor Corporation has announced a new project: retrofitting 3,000 diesel-powered vehicles per year to run on hydrogen. This ambitious scheme, signed in Ruzhou on September 4, 2025, also includes the installation of five new hydrogen refueling stations to support the converted fleet.
What makes this move groundbreaking is how it could spark a chain reaction of fleet conversions. By updating existing diesel trucks rather than building new hydrogen models from scratch, Dongfeng leverages existing assets and infrastructure—all while making the shift to zero-emission heavy transport much more cost-effective.
The initial conversions are set to begin immediately in Ruzhou, where the refueling infrastructure is being built first. This region will effectively serve as a “hydrogen pilot zone” and testing ground for broader adoption across China. The refueling stations will ensure the converted fleet remains operational and scalable.
Beyond reducing carbon footprints, this initiative has the potential to reshape the logistics and transport industries. Hydrogen-powered trucks offer faster refueling compared to battery electrics and enable longer travel ranges—making them especially practical for long-haul and heavy-duty operations. If successful, the project can offer a replicable model: retrofit infrastructures, hydrogen refueling networks, and updated fleets that can be deployed nationwide.
For the larger industry, the implications are massive. Fleets can convert at scale, hydrogen infrastructure demand increases, and component suppliers—all aligned toward a low-carbon future—get a boost. Dongfeng is not just introducing new vehicles; it’s igniting an ecosystem shift toward hydrogen-powered logistics at scale.
