Svolt Energy targets Q4 for semi solid state battery trial production

Svolt Energy’s chairman, Yang Hongxin, announced that trial production of their first-generation 140 Ah semi-solid state batteries is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter, utilizing their existing mass-production line.

These semi-solid batteries, characterized as soft-pack with an energy density of 300 Wh/kg and cost-effectiveness, are intended for BMW’s Mini brand’s upcoming models, with mass production slated for 2027. Future plans include a second generation aiming for 360 Wh/kg and first-generation all-solid-state batteries targeting 400 Wh/kg for low-altitude flight and automotive uses.

Concurrently, Svolt recently launched its second-generation Dragon Armor Battery from its Huzhou facility. This ternary lithium battery for extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) boasts a 65 kWh capacity, making it the largest in mass production globally. It supports 5C fast charging, achieving 20% to 80% charge in 12 minutes, and its compatibility across MPVs, SUVs, and sedans will reduce development costs.

Unveiled in December 2022, the Dragon Armor Battery introduces a novel battery pack structure, akin to innovative designs by BYD and CATL. Svolt had previously indicated that this battery, using lithium iron phosphate cells, could achieve a 76% volume packaging efficiency and over 800 km range. Utilizing high-manganese iron nickel cells could extend the range beyond 900 kilometers, while employing ternary cells might achieve a range exceeding 1,000 kilometers.

Svolt, which originated as a spin-off from Great Wall Motor in 2018, is dedicated to the development and production of battery components, complete battery systems, and energy storage solutions. The company is a prominent Chinese battery manufacturer, ranking ninth in the domestic power battery market in June with 1.20 GWh installed and a 2.06% market share, as per CABIA data.
