Uber to use Baidu robotaxi for markets across Asia and Middle East
News, 16 July 2025
Baidu has entered into a multi-year partnership with Uber Technologies (NYSE: UBER), bringing its Apollo Go autonomous vehicles to Uber’s platform in key markets across Asia, the Middle East, and beyond—excluding the US and China.
The rollout, slated to begin later this year, will see thousands of sixth-generation Apollo Go robotaxis become available to Uber passengers, who will soon be able to opt for fully driverless rides. This collaboration is designed to integrate Baidu’s advanced autonomous driving technology into Uber’s expansive global network, ultimately offering more affordable and reliable shared mobility options.
Baidu has joined the ranks of Chinese autonomous vehicle developers partnering with Uber to accelerate their global rollout. In September 2024, WeRide (NASDAQ: WRD) formed an alliance with Uber, aiming to introduce its autonomous vehicles to the platform and expand operations to 15 additional cities worldwide over over the next five years, with planned expansion into cities across Europe and the Middle East. Likewise, Pony AI (NASDAQ: PONY) announced its partnership with Uber on May 6, outlining plans to launch robotaxi services in the Middle East later this year and to further broaden its reach into new international markets.
Baidu, a pioneer in China’s autonomous driving sector since 2013, has steadily expanded Apollo Go’s reach. As of May, Apollo Go had recorded over 11 million rides and was operating in 15 cities, with a global fleet size now reaching 1,000 vehicles. Recent milestones include launching services in Dubai and Abu Dhabi in March, commencing road validation tests in Dubai in May, and receiving approval for passenger testing on open roads in Hong Kong—its first right-hand drive market.
The company intends to launch Apollo Go robotaxi services in Switzerland and establish a local entity there in the coming months.
