Pony.ai aims to expand its robotaxi fleet
News, 15 July 2025
Pony.ai aims to expand their fleet of robotaxis to over 1,000 vehicles by the end of 2025, through deployment of its seventh-generation (Gen-7) Robotaxi. The Gen-7 system integrates vehicle-agnostic virtual driver technology, combining software, hardware, and services to establish a commercially viable autonomous mobility business model.
Pony.ai will primarily focus on deploying robotaxi services in Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, with paid driverless services already active in some cities. They are also expanding their global footprint, with testing and partnerships in regions like South Korea, Luxembourg, and the Middle East (including Dubai).
Pony.ai also operates its own autonomous ride-hailing services through the “PonyPilot App”. They are also exploring other mobility services like autonomous delivery and logistics. Strategic partnerships with automotive giants like Toyota, GAC, and BAIC are crucial for co-developing and integrating their technology into mass-produced vehicles.
Pony.ai has covered over 45 million kilometers in global autonomous driving tests, including more than 8 million kilometers in fully driverless operations. While they faced a suspension of their driverless testing permit in California after an accident in 2021, and a recent fire incident in Beijing in May 2025 led to temporary service suspensions, the company emphasizes robust safety methodologies and hardware redundancies.
