Toyota explores utilisation of boil-off gas for its liquid hydrogen vehicle

Expanding Possibilities with the Liquid Hydrogen-Powered GR Corolla in the Season Final Round.

The ORC ROOKIE GR Corolla H2 Concept, is a hydrogen-powered GR Corolla which operates on liquid hydrogen.

The liquid hydrogen-powered GR Corolla, has been racing in endurance races in Japan and abroad. GR Corolla fuel supply system was changed to liquid hydrogen, but the engine remained the same as when it was running on gaseous hydrogen. GR Corolla utilizes a sophisticated storage system that maintains hydrogen at extremely low temperatures of -253 degrees Celsius. This cold storage technique prevents the gas from vaporizing excessively, a common issue known as boil-off gas.

Toyota is exploring the utilization of boil-off gas, which is the hydrogen that vaporizes due to external heat. This concept aims to convert the vaporized hydrogen back into usable fuel for the vehicle. It involves a self-pressurizer that can increase the pressure of the boil-off gas without requiring additional energy, thus enhancing the overall energy efficiency of the hydrogen system. The vehicle features an advanced liquid hydrogen pump with improved durability, crucial for the performance during long endurance races. This pump now incorporates a dual-drive crank mechanism which allows for better balance and longevity under the high pressures associated with pumping liquid hydrogen.

A significant enhancement includes the transition from a cylindrical to a custom oval-shaped tank, which boosts hydrogen storage capacity by 1.5 times over previous designs. This increase allows for a greater cruising range than earlier models, addressing performance and efficiency in endurance racing conditions.

Toyota is actively seeking partnerships to evolve its hydrogen technology further, particularly in improving the energy recovery systems associated with boil-off gas. Their long-term vision includes achieving functionalities that enhance not only vehicle performance but also broader environmental sustainability through carbon neutrality initiatives.

The development of the GR Corolla liquid hydrogen vehicle signifies Toyota’s commitment to advancing hydrogen fuel technology in motorsports, while also contributing to environmental goals through innovative engineering and design.
