REE Automotive and Mitsubishi Fuso sign MoU to jointly develop software-defined truck platform

In a move signalling a major push into the next generation of connected commercial vehicles, REE Automotive Ltd. (Nasdaq: REE) and Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (Mitsubishi Fuso) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on developing a software-defined truck platform. The agreement marks the start of a one-year evaluation phase during which a Mitsubishi Fuso eCanter electric truck will be converted into an SDV using REE’s zonal architecture and x-by-wire (XBW) system.

Under the deal, Mitsubishi Fuso will assess the suitability of REE’s technology as a future scalable platform for its commercial vehicle line-up, enabling over-the-air (OTA) updates, built-in cybersecurity, AI-driven serviceability and cloud-connected features. REE’s architecture aims to simplify hardware complexity by using a zonal electronic control unit (ECU) layout and replace traditional mechanical linkages with x-by-wire systems — key enablers for autonomous, connected and software-centric trucks.

Both companies emphasise that their combined strengths can help accelerate the transformation of commercial vehicles into smarter, safer and more flexible assets — a critical shift given the rise in electrification, connectivity demands and logistics efficiency pressures.
