Global car-buyer behaviour shifts: five key trends automakers can’t ignore
Press Release, 5 November 2025
A new study from Boston Consulting Group (BCG), surveying over 9,000 consumers across ten countries, finds that the global auto-market is undergoing a profound transformation as car-buyers rethink loyalty, electrification and how they shop for vehicles.
The report highlights several major shifts: brand allegiance is eroding (for example, roughly 63 % of Europeans say they’re open to switching brands) and Chinese-automakers are making noticeable global inroads — 36 % of Brazilian buyers and 10-20 % of European ones now say they would consider buying a Chinese car. Meanwhile, the move to battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) is clearly gaining traction, with 71 % of current BEV owners saying they intend to choose another for their next car. Yet resistance remains: about a quarter of consumers in Europe and 28 % in the US say they will “never” buy one. Digital-first purchasing is also rising — more than 40 % of younger buyers say they’d be open to buying a car online without ever inspecting it in person. BCG’s authors note that automakers must not merely follow these trends, but anticipate and shape them, by investing in innovation, software-defined experiences and consumer trust to succeed in the next decade.
