JCB gets approval for its hydrogen engine
News, 30 May 2025
JCB has received the first complete EU type-approval for its hydrogen engine intended for non-road mobile machinery. In addition to other areas that accept EU type-approvals, such the EEA and EFTA territories, JCB is now able to market and incorporate its hydrogen engine into its own machinery and third-party OEM equipment throughout all 27 EU member states.
According to Regulation (EU) 2016/1628, JCB’s hydrogen combustion engine has been granted an EU type-approval certificate, confirming that it satisfies the most recent EU Stage V emission criteria. The engine’s commercial usage under “new technology” regulations was previously approved by licensing authorities in nine European nations, and this EU clearance expands on those permissions.
Additionally, JCB obtained certification in Great Britain quite fast, first as “new-technology” and then as full type-approval. JCB is the first manufacturer of construction equipment to create a completely authorized hydrogen-fueled combustion engine. The project took 150 engineers over four years to complete and cost £100 million. The company has previously manufactured more than 130 evaluation engines that power generator sets, backhoe loaders, and all telescopic handlers.
