VW & Rivian joint venture hits key milestones in first year
Press Release, 14 November 2025
Volkswagen Group and Rivian report significant progress in developing the next generation of software-defined vehicles (SDVs). A globally distributed team exceeding 1,500 engineers—spanning the U.S., Canada, Sweden, Serbia and Germany—is now in place, and the venture is actively building zonal electronic architecture and software for future VW, Scout and Audi electric models.
Looking ahead, RV Tech is preparing its first winter testing of reference vehicles from the VW Group brands in Q1 2026, with hardware and architecture already defined for alignment with the future SSP electric vehicle platform. The partnership is also strengthening its European footprint with a new location in Berlin, enhancing close collaboration with VW’s European brands. VW Group CEO Oliver Blume emphasised that this venture lays the digital foundation for the company’s future vehicles—enabling OTA updates, modular components and more integrated, high-tech cabin experience at accessible price points.
Overall, the first 12 months of RV Tech show how a legacy automaker and a tech-driven EV firm are combining strengths to accelerate the shift toward software and services in mobility. With ambitious targets ahead and multiple brands planning to adopt the technology, the partnership is positioning itself as a powerful enabler of the next electric and connected mobility era.
