Volkswagen AG said on 29th September, that its software unit Car.Software Org is acquiring the front camera-software business area of HELLA Aglaia Mobile Vision GmbH, a subsidiary of Germany’s Hella GmbH & Co. KGaA.
The acquisition is scheduled to be completed at the beginning of 2021, once approved by antitrust authorities, the German carmaker said. Financial details of the acquisition weren’t disclosed yet.
By acquiring the camera software business area of HELLA together with the relevant image processing know-how, we are continuing our strategy of developing key software components in-house in the future. This way, we will boost the development of competence in the field of computer vision within the Car.Software Org and strengthen our position for the development of safe and innovative driving functions,
Dirk Hilgenberg, CEO of the Car.Software Org.
Roughly half of HELLA Aglaia’s employees are going to be transferred to Car.Software Org, Volkswagen said, without specifying the precise number.
Car.Software Org groups the software skills of Volkswagen’s different car brands like Audi and Porsche and is developing a uniform software architecture for vehicles of all brands among other software-related tasks. “To accomplish these tasks, investments in excess of more than seven billion euros ($8.17 billion) are planned up to 2025,” Volkswagen said.
