Uttar Pradesh to enforce mandatory GPS tracking & panic buttons in public transport
News, 29 December 2025
The Uttar Pradesh transport department has announced a major safety overhaul for public transport across the state, set to take effect from January 1, 2026. Under the new directive, all public service vehicles including buses and passenger carriers must be equipped with AIS-140-compliant GPS tracking systems and emergency panic buttons.
The move aims to significantly enhance passenger safety by enabling real-time vehicle monitoring and immediate alerts in case of accidents, breakdowns, or security threats. Authorities will use the VAHAN portal to verify compliance at key checkpoints, including vehicle registration, renewal, and ownership transfer, ensuring that no non-compliant vehicle remains on the road.
What’s AIS-140?
The Automotive Industry Standard 140 (AIS-140) mandates advanced vehicle tracking systems with GPS and panic button functionality, allowing transport officials and emergency services to pinpoint a vehicle’s location instantly during critical situations. These systems are designed to work with national and state safety networks for faster response times.
From April 1, 2026, the enforcement will tighten further:
✔ Installation checks during fitness tests
✔ Verification during PUC (Pollution Under Control) certification
✔ Non-compliant vehicles may be denied fitness and permits, effectively barring them from operating.
Officials clarified that the rule will not apply to e-rickshaws, three-wheelers, and vehicles that do not require transport permits.
This new regulation marks a significant step toward integrating technology and public safety in India’s transport ecosystem potentially reducing accidents, speeding up emergency response, and boosting commuter confidence on the road.
