UP gets record EV registrations

Date: September 5, 2023. — Uttar Pradesh has achieved a significant milestone by registering the highest number of electric vehicles (EVs) in the country. Between January and September, the state registered 1,70,269 electric vehicles.

The total number of electric vehicles registered between January and September of CY23 as compared to CY22 increased by 4.9%. Vahan, which tracks vehicle registrations, reported 10,24,781 registrations in India. Various factors, including government incentives, infrastructure development, and increased awareness of environmental issues, have contributed to this extraordinary growth.

According to statistics, Uttar Pradesh had the highest number of electric car registrations, followed by Maharashtra and Karnataka. Maharashtra and Karnataka registered 1,24,558 and 1,00,235 electric cars, respectively.

To encourage the adoption of electric vehicles, the state government has introduced a range of incentives and policies. These include subsidies on EV purchases, tax exemptions, and the establishment of charging infrastructure across key cities and highways. Furthermore, we have initiated awareness campaigns and educational programs to inform citizens about the benefits of electric mobility.

After the Union government reduced the FAME II subsidy, the sales of electric vehicles fell in June. People registered only 46,025 vehicles, compared to 1,05,316 in May. With 62,315 electric vehicles registered in August, sales did however see a rise.

ICRA predicts that by FY25, electric two-wheelers will account for 10–12% of new vehicle sales in the nation. In comparison, electric three-wheelers and buses are expected to constitute 14–16% of new vehicle sales, respectively.
