Uber signs robotaxi deal with Lucid and Nuro

News, 21 July 2025

Uber has partnered with Lucid and Nuro to roll out a fleet of more than 20,000 self-driving taxis. This initiative aims to capitalize on the rapid adoption of driverless vehicles, as cities globally gear up for the large-scale deployment of autonomous technology

The deal brings together Uber’s vast ride-sharing network, Lucid’s cutting-edge electric vehicle technology, and Nuro’s expertise in autonomous driving systems. As part of the partnership, Lucid will supply a specialized version of its electric cars, integrated with Nuro’s autonomous driving systems, to create a new generation of robotaxis.

This initiative follows Uber’s ongoing efforts to push the boundaries of electric and autonomous transport. The company has been investing heavily in autonomous vehicle technology and driverless taxi services in recent years. With the backing of Lucid’s high-performance electric vehicles and Nuro’s robust AV platform, Uber is poised to significantly expand its fleet of autonomous taxis.

The first autonomous taxis are expected to hit the streets in select cities in the next two to three years. The companies have stated that the robotaxis will be fully electric, emission-free, and capable of operating autonomously without the need for a driver or safety operator on board.

Uber’s CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, emphasized that the partnership is a step toward the company’s goal of creating a more sustainable and efficient transportation network. “The future of transportation is autonomous, and with Lucid’s innovation and Nuro’s expertise, we’re moving closer to a new era of mobility,” Khosrowshahi said.
