Uber and WeRide launch robotaxi rides in Riyadh

Uber Technologies, Inc. and WeRide Inc. have begun offering autonomous robotaxi passenger rides in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia — marking the first time self-driving vehicles are available through the Uber platform in the Kingdom.

Starting immediately, Uber users travelling between Roshn Front and Princess Noura University may select a WeRide Robotaxi GXR for their journey. Each ride is bookable in the Uber app and currently includes an on-board safety operator during this pilot phase.

This launch is backed by the Transport General Authority (TGA) and aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiative to modernise mobility and deploy smarter, greener transport solutions.

The robotaxi service builds on WeRide’s earlier achievements — including autonomous vehicle permits in multiple countries and deployment experience across 30+ cities — and sees Uber leveraging its ride-hailing infrastructure to scale driverless mobility internationally.

Operators say the initial phase is crucial: it enables real-world data collection and offers riders a seamless, app-based autonomous ride experience in the urban Saudi environment. In time, the service will evolve toward fully driverless operations once safety, regulatory and operational milestones are cleared.

Together, Uber and WeRide’s debut in Riyadh showcases the accelerating shift from conventional ride-hailing toward autonomous mobility at scale — with Saudi Arabia positioning itself as a frontier market for self-driving vehicle services.
