Tobii and STMicroelectronics begin mass production of single camera interior sensing system
Tobii and STMicroelectronics have started mass production of an advanced interior sensing system designed for deployment in a premium European automaker’s upcoming models. The system uses a single wide-angle camera to monitor both the driver and passengers, operating seamlessly under both daylight (RGB) and low-light (infrared) conditions. This integrated solution blends Tobii’s attention and occupant monitoring algorithms with ST’s new VD1940 image sensor geared toward automotive safety applications.
This collaboration enables automakers to rely on one compact, cost-efficient sensor rather than deploying multiple devices. ST’s SafeSense platform, which incorporates the VD1940, offers features such as functional safety and cybersecurity to support both Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) and Occupant Monitoring Systems (OMS). The solution promises to improve in-cab awareness, enabling smarter and safer experiences by detecting driver attention, passenger presence, and behavioral cues — all from a single imaging unit. As production ramps up, Tobii and ST expect this technology will help automakers advance in-vehicle safety and human-machine interaction capabilities.
