Thales, Futurex, and Utimaco take top spots in ABI Research’s payment HSM vendor competitive ranking

Press Release, 12 March 2025

The payment Hardware Security Module (HSM) market is evolving toward greater flexibility, customization, and service delivery. The new competitive ranking by global technology intelligence firm ABI Research provides an assessment of the top eight payment HSM vendors, analyzed through various criteria including capabilities in technology development and deployment, commercialization, breadth of solutions and features.

“The assessment focused on 10 criteria across two major segments: innovation and implementation. The innovation criteria analyzed payment HSM configuration and capabilities, service options, partner ecosystem, management platform, and quantum-safe capabilities. The implementation criteria examined the types of payment HSM solutions on offer, the applications served, the available cryptographic algorithms, standards and regulation compliance, and go-to-market strategies,” explains Michela Menting, Senior Research Director at ABI Research.

Thales took the lead in the ranking. A global heavyweight in the payment HSM space with its payShield product line, it offers a powerful solution and commands a vast network of partners around the world, making payShield a recognized and trusted brand in the space that is hard to rival. Futurex ranked second with a broad range of available payment HSM solutions through CryptoHub, and providing excellent differentiation in its architectural design and management capabilities, focusing on opening the platform to the customer in unique ways, with Software-Defined Kits (SDKs), expanded user access, and robust virtualization. Utimaco placed third with its Atalla AT1000, boasting a feature-rich appliance and service capabilities that practically mirror the performance of its on-premises appliances, ensuring top performance, low latency, and high availability for its MYHSM offering.

Kryptus scored high on the innovation criteria with its kNET HSM, a highly flexible and customizable payment solution. Despite being a smaller, local player from Brazil, Kryptus has shown it can compete on the world stage in the payment HSM space with an agile and responsive platform. Not far behind, with a niche but solid reputation in Europe, Eviden had an equally strong showing, offering a tailored approach to payment security, combined with cloud capabilities.

Worldline, Marvell, and Procenne brought up the rear, but despite follower status, each has specific strengths in the payment HSM space. Worldline has the potential to leverage its rich payment portfolio of software and services, and the customer base it has built there, to effectively market its payment HSM as a core product offering and make a name for itself in the space. Marvell is the newest player in this market, with an exceptionally performant converged HSM targeted at the cloud service provider space. Finally, Procenne, a local player in Turkey, is well placed to take advantage of its position there to expand regionally with a decent HSM offering that is highly appealing to more price-sensitive markets in its region.

As the payment HSM market continues to evolve, the need for robust, flexible, and innovative solutions is more critical than ever,” Menting concludes. “This competitive ranking highlights the vendors leading the way in delivering cutting-edge security solutions, ensuring trust, compliance, and efficiency in digital transactions worldwide.”
