Tesla slashes full self-driving subscription cost by 50%
Date: April 16, 2024. — Tesla had made a significant change to its Full Self-Driving (FSD) subscription pricing, cutting the monthly cost by 50%. The new subscription fee is now $99 per month, down from the previous rate of $199 per month. This adjustment follows a statement by Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, indicating that the price of FSD would increase as the system improved. However, the recent price reduction suggests a strategic shift to make the advanced driving features more accessible to a broader range of customers.
The FSD package offers Tesla owners a suite of autonomous driving features, including the ability to navigate to a destination semi-autonomously, as well as automatic stopping at stop signs and traffic lights. Despite its name, FSD does not render Tesla vehicles fully autonomous, but it does provide a range of advanced capabilities that enhance the driving experience.
This price reduction is especially significant because it follows Tesla’s March 2024 announcement that qualified owners will be able to take advantage of a 30-day free trial of FSD—an offer that is still open to those who haven’t taken advantage of it. Furthermore, Tesla renamed the feature “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” to make it clear that driver monitoring is required and that it is not meant to be completely autonomous.
The reduction in subscription fees could potentially lead to increased adoption of the FSD package, providing Tesla with more data to refine its AI models and improve the system’s reliability. Those interested in permanently adding FSD to their Tesla can do so at the purchase price of $12,000, reduced from $15,000 in 2022. The new subscription pricing structure makes the advanced driving features more affordable on a monthly basis and may influence customer decisions regarding the adoption of autonomous driving technology.
