Tata’s EV battery plant in UK to be operational in 2027, largest in Europe

News, 1 July 2025

Tata Group’s electric vehicle (EV) battery factory in Bridgwater, Somerset, with an anticipated opening in 2027, will be one of the largest in Europe. This £4 billion facility, owned by Agratas, a battery subsidiary of Tata Group (parent company of JLR), received approval over a year ago to be built on a World War Two site.

A significant milestone was achieved recently with the erection of the first British-sourced steel frames for the main production building, and work on subsequent structures is set to begin as foundations are completed. The factory, to be known as Agratas South West, marks Tata’s first battery manufacturing venture outside India.

Upon completion, the plant will boast a 40GWh capacity, making it one of Europe’s largest and fulfilling nearly half of the UK’s projected EV production battery needs by 2030. The factory is expected to create 4,000 jobs directly, with thousands more in the supply chain as support businesses establish themselves nearby.

Initially, the factory will produce prismatic cells for Tata Motors and JLR, with future plans to expand production for other applications like commercial vehicles, two-wheelers, and energy storage. The cell chemistry will be adaptable to accommodate technological advancements.
