Switzerland allows autonomous vehicles from March 2025
News, 6 January 2025
Switzerland will permit fully autonomous driving on designated routes starting March 1, 2025. Drivers will be able to use automated piloting systems, like Tesla’s autopilot, on motorways, but must be ready to take control if needed. Local cantons will approve the routes, and a control center will oversee them. Driverless parking systems will also be permitted under local regulations.
The Swiss Federal Council hopes that these changes will improve safety, reduce traffic congestion, and create new economic opportunities.
Switzerland has also had some experience with autonomous vehicles, including- SmartShuttle, a self-driving buses for public transport services. The two buses, “Valère” and “Tourbillon”, have transported almost 54,000 passengers in Sion city center since June 2016.
