Research at Swiss Re one of the top reinsurers in the world, which examines liability claims pertaining to collisions from 25.3 million Waymo completely autonomous miles. The study builds on our earlier work and uses aggregate statistics of auto liability claims as a stand-in for at-fault collisions. It proves that the Waymo Driver performs noticeably better than the general driving population as well as the newest generation of human-driven cars with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), as we’ve expanded operations throughout Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin.
Swiss Re’s data from more than 500,000 claims and more than 200 billion miles of exposure served as the basis for the study’s comparison of Waymo’s liability claims to human driver baselines. With a 92% decrease in claims for bodily injuries and an 88% decrease in claims for property damage, it was shown that the Waymo Driver outperformed human-driven vehicles in terms of safety.Over 25.3 million kilometers, the Waymo driver was actually only involved in two personal injury claims and nine property damage claims. According to the article, both bodily injury claims are still pending. Human drivers should anticipate 26 claims for personal injuries and 78 claims for property damage over the same distance.
Notably, the safety benefits of the Waymo Driver remain valid even when contrasted with more recent models (2018–2021) that come with contemporary safety features. This includes advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) including blind spot warning, lane keeping assistance, automated emergency braking, and forward collision warning. Compared to this group, the Waymo Driver showed an 86% reduction in property damage claims and a 90% reduction in bodily injury claims.
This research supports our safety impact statistics, which shows that, regardless of who was at fault, the Waymo Driver had fewer serious collisions than human drivers across 25 million miles of completely autonomous driving.
