STMicroelectronics has deepened its commitment to the future of ultra-wideband (UWB) technology by securing a seat on the board of directors of the FiRa® Consortium. The move comes as Rias Al-Kadi, General Manager of ST’s Range and Connectivity Division, joins the board to help steer the industry group’s efforts in advancing secure, high-precision ranging and positioning solutions.
ST is already playing a central role in developing the IEEE 802.15.4ab amendment, which builds on existing UWB standards to improve system performance and unlock new applications. These enhancements are expected to deliver centimeter-level accuracy, stronger security, and reduced power consumption—capabilities that will drive adoption in areas such as automotive digital keys, smart home systems, and next-generation IoT devices. For the automotive sector in particular, the integration of IEEE 802.15.4ab into the Connected Car Consortium’s (CCC) Digital Key ecosystem could mark a breakthrough in making UWB-based access solutions more practical and widely available.
Industry leaders have welcomed ST’s expanded involvement. FiRa Consortium Chairman SK Yong highlighted the appointment as a recognition of ST’s long-term contributions to UWB, noting that Al-Kadi’s leadership will help expand the technology’s global footprint. In response, Al-Kadi emphasized ST’s strategy of active participation in international standards bodies—including IEEE, the CCC, the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), and the UWB Alliance—to ensure interoperability and maximize the value UWB delivers across industries.
By joining FiRa’s board, ST reinforces its position at the forefront of UWB innovation, working to build a secure, cost-effective ecosystem that supports the growing demand for smarter mobility, connected devices, and seamless digital experiences. The appointment also aligns with the company’s broader vision of enabling sustainable, technology-driven solutions that address real-world challenges for consumers and industries alike.
