Singapore greenlights fully autonomous bus operations

News, 21 July 2025

WeRide has received requisite permissions from Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) to operate its autonomous Robobus in Sentosa without a human safety operator onboard.

Since June 2023, the Robobus has been running within Resorts World Sentosa under human supervision. According to LTA regulations, all self-driving vehicles must undergo extensive safety evaluations before being permitted to function without human oversight. The Robobus has lidar, optical sensors and radars which can detect objects up to 200 meters away. So far, the vehicle has maintained good safety record.

This approval is in line with Singapore’s ongoing initiative to incorporate autonomous vehicles into its transportation infrastructure. Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow recently indicated that AVs could be operating on public roads within five years. Meanwhile, WeRide is deepening its investment in Singapore by setting up a research and development centre, supported by the Economic Development Board (EDB).
