Pony.ai and Chenqi Mobility roll out 100+ next-gen Robotaxis in China
20th March 2026
Autonomous driving company Pony.ai has teamed up with Chenqi Mobility to launch a new robotaxi fleet in China, marking a significant step toward large-scale commercialization of self-driving mobility. As part of the partnership, Pony.ai has delivered an initial batch of over 100 seventh-generation (Gen-7) robotaxis, which will soon begin commercial operations on Chenqi’s OnTime ride-hailing platform. These vehicles are built on the GAC AION V electric model and are designed to deliver a safer, smoother, and more comfortable passenger experience. The move also signals an upgraded strategic collaboration between the two companies, aimed at expanding robotaxi services beyond their current operational cities and accelerating the deployment of autonomous mobility solutions.
Under the new partnership framework, Pony.ai will focus on advancing its core autonomous driving system, known as the “Virtual Driver,” while adopting a technology licensing model to supply its self-driving software to fleet operators. Meanwhile, Chenqi Mobility will handle fleet ownership, operations, safety management, and ride-hailing services. This clear division of roles creates a scalable and sustainable business model for robotaxi deployment. The Gen-7 platform introduces major improvements, including a 70% reduction in autonomous driving system costs and a vehicle lifespan of up to 600,000 kilometers, significantly enhancing fleet economics.
In addition to cost and durability gains, the new robotaxis come equipped with user-friendly features such as Bluetooth unlocking, voice interaction, and pre-trip climate control, improving the overall passenger experience. The companies have already demonstrated positive operational economics in cities like Guangzhou and Shenzhen, reinforcing confidence in the commercial viability of robotaxis at scale.
Overall, this collaboration reflects the rapid progress of autonomous vehicle technology in China and highlights how strategic partnerships are helping bring robotaxis closer to widespread adoption, setting the stage for the future of urban mobility.
