Pilotfish unveils dual-communication gateway for smarter public transport

Press release. 19 September 2025
Pilotfish today announced the launch of the VG212 Vehicle Gateway. With enhanced vehicle-to-backoffice connectivity with redundant 4G (possible 4G/5G) and continuous and accurate positioning with GNSS and dead reckoning, the VG212 marks the next step in building reliable, scalable, and future-ready digital environments for public transport.
Pilotfish Networks AB expands its hardware offering with the launch of the Pilotfish® VG212 Vehicle Gateway, an upgraded vehicle gateway built to serve as the backbone of connected public transport fleets. At the heart of the VG212 is a redundant dual-modem setup that ensures uninterrupted connectivity using 4G and 5G. Whether operating in dense urban areas or rural routes, the gateway automatically switches between channels to maintain a stable data flow.

Pilotfish® VG212 – the new and upgraded Vehicle Gateway from Pilotfish.
“Connectivity is at the core of everything we do” says Marcus Berglund, CEO of Pilotfish Networks AB. “With the VG212, we’re giving our customers a best-in- class, dual-communication solution that keeps fleets connected under all conditions – today and in the future.”
As part of the Pilotfish® Vehicle Communication Platform (VCP), the VG212 is built on an open and standardized architecture. Like the other Pilotfish® gateways, it provides ITxPT services such as Module Inventory, Time, GNSS Location, FMS to IP, VEHICLEtoIP, and MQTT. This ensures high flexibility in the choice of onboard solutions and simplifies integration across both modern ITxPT and older legacy systems.
Equipped with a wide range of advanced embedded features – including redundant connectivity, GNSS with dead reckoning, MQTT broker, CAN/FMS, DHCP, and SNMP– the VG212 guarantees high availability and secure data management. This makes it a reliable access point for operators who need continuous insight into their fleets.
“The VG212 is more than a piece of hardware – it’s an enabler for next-generation mobility,” adds Berglund. “We’ve listened closely to our customers and built a gateway that reflects the operational and technical needs of today, whileanticipating the requirements of tomorrow.”
The VG212 works seamlessly with Pilotfish® Software services such as Onboard Insight, Bus Insight and Energy Economy. This forms a powerful combination for real-time fleet visibility. While the VG212 ensures stable and secure data transmission from the vehicle, the software services transforms that data into actionable insights – providing a clear view of equipment status, vehicle health, energy consumption across the entire fleet. Together, they deliver a complete, integrated solution for smarter, data-driven operations.
The VG212 is available to order now and will begin shipping in Q3 2025. For technical specifications and detailed documentation, visit pilotfish.se.
