Mapbox introduces 3D lanes for smarter, more realistic navigation — Debuts with BMW Group

Press Release, 5 January 2026

Mapbox, a location platform for developers, has unveiled its latest innovation 3D Lanes, a new feature designed to make digital navigation more intuitive and lifelike. Integrated into the Mapbox Navigation SDK, this feature delivers a windshield-like view of the road by adding 3D lane geometries, markings, and realistic models of overpasses and tunnels. The goal: to reduce driver confusion at complex junctions and make navigation safer and smoother, whether in vehicles or on mobile devices.

The 3D Lanes feature addresses one of the biggest challenges in navigation missed turns and misjudged exits which can lead to frustrating delays and detours. By bringing a true-to-life 3D perspective, drivers can now better understand which lane to stay in or when to merge, particularly at highway forks and multi-lane intersections. This feature builds on Mapbox’s recent rollout of 3D buildings and landmarks, offering an even more immersive and context-aware mapping experience.

In developing 3D Lanes, Mapbox collaborated closely with its launch partner, BMW Group, known for its commitment to premium in-car experiences. “BMW Group works relentlessly to build the best navigation experiences for our drivers, and we know precise lane information makes navigating easy and intuitive,” said Stephan Durach, Senior Vice President, Development Digital Services and Infotainment at BMW Group.

Beyond automotive use, Mapbox Navigation with 3D Lanes also supports mobile applications for logistics, delivery fleets, and ride-hailing services that rely on precise lane-level guidance. “Our 3D Lanes feature ensures drivers never miss a turn, bringing us closer to hyper-local, immersive mapping,” said Peter Sirota, CEO of Mapbox. “Developers can now create navigation experiences that are not only more accurate but also more visually aligned with real-world driving.”

Currently available in private preview, developers can request access to the Mapbox Navigation SDK with 3D Lanes through the official Mapbox sign-up page. With this launch, Mapbox continues its mission to make digital maps smarter, safer, and more human-centered.
