Lucidean secures $18M seed funding to advance next-gen optical links for data centers

Press Release, 26 December 2025

Lucidean, a Santa Barbara–based AI interconnect startup, has raised $18 million in Series Seed funding to accelerate the development of its next-generation coherent optical links designed for modern data centers. The funding round was co-led by Entrada Ventures and Koch Disruptive Technologies (KDT), with participation from Foothill Ventures, M Ventures, Cerberus Ventures and Raptor Group. This investment will help Lucidean expand research and development, validate the performance of its CohZero™ platform, and speed up the path toward productization.

Today’s data centers face a major challenge: traditional intensity-modulation direct-detection (IMDD) optical links are simple and low-cost but struggle over longer distances, while conventional coherent links deliver higher performance at the cost of complexity, power usage and expense. Lucidean’s CohZero™ technology aims to bridge this gap by delivering coherent-class performance within an IMDD-like simplicity and power profile. The architecture works with existing IMDD components such as widely used lasers and simplified digital signal processors, promising higher data rates and better tolerance to fiber impairments without demanding disruptive changes to current infrastructure. This makes it easier for cloud and AI networks to scale to multi-terabit performance without the overhead of traditional coherent systems.

In conjunction with the funding announcement, Lucidean named Dr. James Raring as its new Chief Executive Officer. Raring brings more than two decades of experience in photonics and optical communications, including leadership in laser technology and optical transceivers, and holds over 300 patents. He will guide the company through its next growth phase, focusing on expanding the team and accelerating the transition from research to real-world hardware demonstrations.

With this strong investor backing and seasoned leadership at the helm, Lucidean is positioning its innovative optical interconnect solutions to play a key role in supporting the performance demands of future AI-driven and cloud-scale data center networks.
