L&T eyes big move into electronics manufacturing, holds talks with Tamil Nadu Government

Indian engineering powerhouse Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is reportedly considering a significant push into the electronics manufacturing services (EMS) sector, with initial discussions underway with the Tamil Nadu government for approximately 200 acres of land near Chennai.

According to multiple outlets, the company — already active in electronics-related fields — aims to build integrated, end-to-end manufacturing capabilities rather than simply assembling components. The land in Tamil Nadu is seen by L&T as a strategic foothold to pivot from heavy engineering and infrastructure projects into high-growth, high-value electronics manufacturing.

Sources indicate that L&T is unlikely to focus on smartphone assembly and may instead target industrial electronics, aerospace components, automotive modules and IoT systems — segments where the firm already has expertise. The move also ties into India’s broader push under “Make in India” and semiconductor/EMS growth strategies.

While still in the early stages and without publicly confirmed plans from L&T or the state government, the talks reflect L&T’s intention to diversify and capture a piece of the rapidly expanding electronics manufacturing ecosystem in India. If realised, this could mark a strategic transformation for the company and a significant boost for Tamil Nadu’s ambitions as a manufacturing hub.
