KSEB’s EV charging stations will be hi-tech zones

KSEB’s new initiative: EV charging stations to become hi-tech ‘Take a Break’ zones.

News, 02 November 2024

For long-distance drivers, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) intends to convert EV charging stations into “Take a Break” locations. Alongside EV charging stations, the new project intends to install coffee shops, rest areas, and restrooms so that travelers can unwind after the exhausting trip.

By 2030, KSEB predicts that the number of electric vehicles in the state will reach 15 million. According to KSEB, 2,700 million units of electricity will be needed for EV charging at a rate of 0.15 kilowatts per kilometer. At the moment, KSEB runs 485 private charging stations in addition to 1,169 charging stations mounted on power poles.

There will be more charging stations built as the number of EVs increases. Additionally, there are plans to work with hotels, lodges, restaurants, and homestays to install fast-charging stations alongside major highways. The space needed for these stations will be 1,000 square feet. The installation of solar panels and charging stations will be funded by the Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology (ANERT).

Surge in registrations

The majority of EVs in the state are two-wheelers, with 138,014 registered. 21,795 four-wheelers and 11,468 three-wheelers are present. Four-wheeler registrations have increased as a result of the introduction of new EV models.

The Play Store has a map of charging stations

KSEB has released a smartphone app called “KE Map,” which is accessible on the Play Store, to assist users in finding EV charging stations. Officials reported that the app’s initial technical problems have been fixed.
