Kanpur plans ₹700 Cr EV park on 500 acres
News, 20 June 2025
Kanpur may soon have a 500-acre EV park, transforming it into a hub for electric vehicle production. This project, managed by the Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA) under the Kanpur Metropolitan Development Vision – 2030, is designed as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), fostering collaboration between government and private sectors.
The chosen location for the EV park boasts exceptional connectivity, crucial for the efficient movement of raw materials and finished goods. Its close proximity to a dedicated freight corridor will ensure streamlined transportation, a vital element for manufacturing operations.
The park is envisioned as a comprehensive ecosystem for EV production, housing a diverse array of manufacturing units. This includes facilities for producing essential components such as electric motors, chassis, steel parts, and lithium-ion cells. Additionally, units for assembling batteries, chargers, controllers, and electronic components will be integrated, creating a self-sufficient supply chain within the park. To further drive technological advancement, a dedicated research and development (R&D) center will be established, focusing on innovations in EV technology and sustainable transportation solutions.
Beyond large-scale manufacturing, the project emphasizes supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) by fostering an integrated EV components cluster. This initiative aims to empower local entrepreneurs and startups, generating new business opportunities and creating significant employment within the region. The establishment of the park is expected to provide numerous job opportunities, boosting the economic well-being of Kanpur and its surrounding areas.
This venture aligns seamlessly with India’s broader ‘Make in India’ initiative and green energy objectives, promising both economic development and a cleaner environmental future. Uttar Pradesh has already demonstrated substantial progress in the EV sector, with approximately 25% of India’s total EVs currently operating within the state. Through the signing of ₹6,000 crore worth of MoUs for EV infrastructure and development, Uttar Pradesh has clearly demonstrated its commitment to leading in EV manufacturing.
The start of EV manufacturing in Kanpur signals a crucial development in Uttar Pradesh’s industrial sector. With strategic planning, robust infrastructure, and a strong emphasis on innovation, the upcoming EV park is poised to establish Kanpur as a powerhouse in India’s burgeoning electric mobility sector. This endeavor not only promises to stimulate economic growth but also contributes significantly to the nation’s sustainability goals, paving the way for a more environmentally friendly and technologically advanced future.
