Jharkhand to unveil electric bicycle with bamboo frame

Jharkhand is poised to unveil this November: India’s first electric bicycle with a frame crafted entirely from bamboo. Developed by an entrepreneur incubated at the Water BANK Foundation, this eco-friendly marvel blends tribal craftsmanship with modern EV technology and is set to debut on Jharkhand Foundation Day.

This pioneering bamboo e-bike leverages bamboo’s strengths—remarkably high strength-to-weight ratio, rapid renewability, and superior vibration-damping—to create a sustainable alternative to traditional metal and plastic frames. Featuring pedal-assist speeds up to 25 km/h, a range of 60 km per charge, and a modular battery system designed for easy replacement or recycling, the concept even explores a solar-charging option to edge closer to self-sustaining mobility.

Saket Kumar, President of the WaterBANK Foundation Trust, emphasizes that this design is more than innovation—it’s a movement empowering communities. By integrating local cycle repair knowledge and bamboo craftsmanship, it offers a DIY model priced at just ₹15,000, making green mobility accessible and affordable.

Industry veterans see big potential beyond bicycles. Mahindra engineers note that this weight-optimized structure could revolutionize electric carts used by street vendors—delivering longer range at lower costs by reducing battery size and energy consumption.

The e-bike will initially roll out in tribal regions of Latehar district, where bamboo craft is ingrained in local tradition. Public test rides are planned for Jharkhand’s 25th foundation anniversary in November.

This fusion of traditional materials, sustainable design, and community empowerment may well set a precedent for rural-friendly, clean-transport solutions.
