India launches ₹600 Crore “Hydrogen Highways” pilot to power heavy-duty vehicles

News, 14 August 2025

In a step toward sustainable and clean mobility, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, India, is rolling out a ₹600 crore(INR 6 billion) pilot project to establish hydrogen fuelling stations along 10 strategic national highway corridors—paving the way for long-haul hydrogen-powered freight and public mobility. The government intends to address the limitations of electric vehicle range for heavy-duty vehicles and commercial freight operations

This initiative is part of the broader Vision 2047 roadmap and dovetails with the National Green Hydrogen Mission, targeting five million metric tons of green hydrogen production by 2030. India’s premier oil and energy giants—Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL)—are in discussions to develop and operate the hydrogen storage and fuelling stations along these corridors.

Moreover, major OEMs such as Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, and Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicles are expected to contribute prototype hydrogen-powered vehicles for field trials. The pilot aims to assess not only technical feasibility but also logistical and geographic challenges, with a view to scaling the network nationwide in the coming years.

This investment sets the stage for a transformative shift in India’s clean mobility infrastructure. Hydrogen highways could become a practical solution for high-mileage transport sectors—like logistics, public buses, and regional freight—where battery-electric systems struggle with range and charging constraints.
