India accelerates green hydrogen drive, launches mobility pilots across 10 routes
Press Release, 13 November 2025
India has taken a significant stride toward a cleaner energy future with the launch of its ambitious National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM). The roadmap targets an annual production of 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) of green hydrogen by 2030 and aims to draw more than ₹8 lakh crore in investment while cutting over ₹1 lakh crore in fossil fuel imports.
On the mobility front, pilot schemes are underway: 37 vehicles — including fuel-cell and hydrogen internal-combustion types — are operating along 10 roadway corridors, complemented by India’s first port-based green hydrogen facility at V.O. Chidambaranar Port. These efforts span high-altitude operations (such as in Leh), road transport and shipping, showcasing hydrogen’s versatility across sectors. The strategic framework also includes incentives like waivers on interstate transmission charges and large-scale open-access for renewable power dedicated to hydrogen production.
Taken together, these initiatives mark a pivotal shift in India’s energy and mobility landscape—linking sustainability, industrial growth and security. With targets in place, pilot projects active, and enabling policy mechanisms established, the groundwork is laid for hydrogen to transition from concept to mass-scale reality.
