Hyundai Motor join hands with IITs on EV ecosystem
Hyundai Motor to collaborate in setting up Hyundai Center of Excellence at IIT
News, 4 December 2024
Hyundai Motor Group announced collaborations with three Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to create a joint research system focused on electrification and batteries.
The Hyundai Motor Group will support the construction of the Hyundai Center of Excellence (CoE) at IIT Delhi. Leading the charge in battery and electrification innovations that are tailored to the particular needs of the Indian market is the Hyundai CoE’s main goal.
In order to collaborate with the three IIT institutions on battery and electrification-related research, Hyundai Motor Group (the Group) intends to invest approximately $7 million over five years, from 2025 to 2029. The partnership will grow to include hydrogen fuel cells and software.
The Group intends to help India develop an ecosystem for electric vehicles (EVs). This will be carried out in tandem with the Indian government’s several measures aimed at increasing the distribution of EVs. The partnership would involve the Centre for Automotive Research and Tribology (CART) at IIT Delhi, the sole EV-related research institute in India.
In addition to conducting collaborative research on academic-industrial cooperation projects, the Hyundai CoE will serve as a platform for human and technological interactions between Korean and Indian professionals in battery and electrification. This will include unique IIT lectures by Group battery and electrification experts, technology exchange meetings, and the management of Korean visit training programs. The Group plans to continue fostering talent development and offering mid- to long-term employment.
These collaborations support the Group’s initiatives to increase its footprint in India in the wake of Hyundai Motor India Limited’s (HMIL) successful initial public offering. According to the Group, Hyundai CoE will be essential in enhancing HMIL’s dedication to India, reflecting the two companies’ shared goal of growth and cooperation, as well as its capacity to conduct research on cutting-edge technologies and create goods tailored to India.
