GSRTC buses now equipped with vehicle tracking system

Date: February 14, 2024. — The Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) installed the Integrated Vehicle Tracking and Passenger Information System (GPS) across its fleet of over 8,000 buses. The project aims to improve the efficiency, safety, and convenience of the state transport services for both the corporation and the passengers.

The project executed in three phases, encompassing 2,400 buses in the first phase, 2,600 buses in the second, and approximately 3,300 buses in the third. Along with this, 591 Passenger Information System (PIS) were installed at 100 different bus terminals. In addition, the Central Office established 16 Divisional Command Control Centres and one Central Command Control Station.

The GPS device installed in the buses enable real-time monitoring of their location, speed, route, and schedule using a sophisticated Integrated Vehicle Tracking (IVT) application based on Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technology. The IVT program improves the corporation’s fleet management and operation by eliminating difficulties such as unauthorized stops, route deviations, over speeding, and trip mismanagement. The technology also ensures travel timeliness, schedule adherence, and lower operational costs, resulting in fewer accidents and claims.

The Passenger Information System (PIS) at the corporation’s main depots delivers real-time and accurate bus information via audio-video devices on platforms. This covers bus routes, service types, projected arrival and departure times, bus numbers, last bus location, station numbers, and so on. Passengers can also obtain this information via a project-related smartphone application, making the entire travel experience more convenient and hassle-free.

The project increased passenger confidence and satisfaction while also improving the corporation’s reputation and revenue. The project also aligns with the state government’s objective of providing smart and sustainable transportation solutions to the people of Gujarat.
