Govt of India approves ₹15 billion to recycle battery & e-waste for critical minerals
News, 5 September 2025
In a move to cut dependence on imports and strengthen supply chain resilience, the Union cabinet has cleared a ₹1,500 crore scheme to promote recycling of battery waste and e-waste for the extraction of critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel. Running till FY31 under the National Critical Mineral Mission, the initiative aims to build a domestic recycling ecosystem, add 270 kilo tonnes of annual recycling capacity, and produce 40 kilo tonnes of key minerals each year.
The scheme offers a 20% capital subsidy on plant and machinery, along with operational incentives linked to incremental sales, capped at ₹50 crore for large firms and ₹25 crore for start-ups. Nearly one-third of the outlay is reserved for smaller entities.
Officials said the plan is expected to attract ₹8,000 crore investment and generate 70,000 direct and indirect jobs, while reducing risks from supply disruptions such as those seen earlier this year when China restricted exports of rare earth magnets.
Industry experts called the move a strategic step toward circular economy and green mobility, aligning with India’s EV adoption goals and sustainability agenda.
